Vinyl fencing has become a smart choice in economically installing a fence on your properties. You finally make the leap and are faced with so many decisions on how the fence will look. Another thing to consider is how well the fence is made. Quality is not always associated with high prices.

There should be other certain aspects overviewed before your purchase including the very materials that make up the PVC vinyl fence. These specific traits can tell you if the quality of the fence is up to par with your standards. Don’t be fooled thinking a fence with a high price must be good. Doing a little research should on different companies and products should be the first step to finding a new vinyl fence.

Do not settle for whatever you can find in the home improvement shop around the corner. Look into the vast options available for your new vinyl fence. Keep personal preference in mind for style and price, but, by far, the most important must-have is quality. No other factor matters if the fence doesn’t last. Follow these guidelines to pick a fence that will be worth your hard earned money.

Quality Factors

A sturdy fence is desired and when dealing with vinyl fencing, most decide its strength from how wide the beams and paneling are. Finding a quality vinyl fence is harder than simply going by the thickness. While this is one of the most important factors to consider, it is not the sole teller of a fence’s quality.

Thickness

While vinyl is a sturdy material, the panels and posts still need a certain level of thickness to stand strong for years and prevent damage. A company skimping on the thickness or giving you weak hollowed pieces could be trying to save on material. This practice will leave them with a higher profit, but the consumer is the one that pays the price with a poorer quality item. Pieces that are at least .4 centimeters or .15 inches should be durable enough for most consumers, anything thinner will be more susceptible to damage.

Reinforcements/ Supports

The supports that span across the bottom of the posts and panels as well as the posts themselves are where a fence holds all of its weight. These load bearing parts need to be strong to keep your fence standing. Galvanized steel or aluminum are stronger options for supports than wood.

An important thing to look for is galvanized steel on the base of the post. Galvanized steel, more than other metals, will resist rust from water. This is vital over time since it will be outdoors.

As for the lower horizontal panel supports, some models include internal support. Internal supports use a second material on the inside of the vinyl to provide additional tenacity to your fence. Not only are metal supports less likely to break but wood is also known to warp, causing a wavy uneven fence line.

Know The Ingredients

Initially feeling or touching a vinyl fence can give a customer an idea if the fence is an ideal thickness. This cannot always guarantee its strength. Paying attention to the small details of the vinyl fence is important. This means looking at exact ingredients and noticing whether they contain stabilizers. Stabilizers are essential to preventing the sagging of the vinyl. Also, if the vinyl fence is made of recycled vinyl it will not be as strong as a virgin vinyl fence.

Hardware

The hardware that comes with your fence is important and not where you want to save your money. Even if you must purchase it separately, be sure to find quality parts to aid your vinyl fence in lasting. It is common to find weak aluminum hardware in many self-assembled products and most times they are not strong enough to get the job done or stay strong. Real stainless steel is the way to go when it comes to hardware. These will not give way or rust for a long time.

Warranties

A quality PVC fence will have the option to come with a limited lifetime warranty. This will cover the regular maintenance and even circumstances where your fence may suffer damage. This is very vital in areas that commonly have high wind velocities. While the stability of vinyl fences have improved, there can occur a problem with leaning when the installation is done incorrectly or is the weather conditions prove too intense.

Research Vinyl Fence Providers

Using well-known companies can prove beneficial because they are likely to continue selling fences into the future. With the maintenance that will come up in the years following your purchase, you will want to have a company that is still able to fulfill your warranty when needed.

Avoid Big Name Stores

Try your best to avoid the mass department chains such as Lowe’s or Home Depot. There is not a wide variety of fencing offered and because of this lack in choice, the quality may suffer as well. The brands carried will always show an inflated retailer’s price.

A way to get the product directly is to find companies that only sell vinyl fencing, or at least focus on it.

Why Vinyl Fencing is Perfect For You

Vinyl Fencing has many advantages over fences made of wood or metal. This includes its price in companion to its durability. Choosing a vinyl fence can save the owner money over time because of the long-lasting, low-maintenance qualities.

Affordability

The low cost of vinyl fencing is what makes the PVC that valuable to everyday consumers. It comes with many of the perks of more traditional types of fencing, but it will cost sufficiently less. Vinyl fencing can be manufactured much easier than any fences made with lumber. All of this leads to a more economic alternative to wood fencing that saves money initially and throughout the years of ownership.

Low Maintenance

Maintenance is needed on a regular basis for a fence. Vinyl PVC fencing does not split or rot, and it’s color can be preserved for long periods of time. Since this vinyl is resistant to a lot of conditions that defer other fences, maintenance does not have to be done as often.

Even when your vinyl fence encounters a problem and needs repaired, there are usually warranties that can be bought at the initial time of purchase.

Practicality

The process of installing a vinyl fence is not extravagant and can be done over a few days without the help of a professional. This not only saves the customer money, but it will be a great accomplishment once done. Guides can easily be found on the internet of how to install PVC fencing, but at the point of purchase, there should be pamphlets and instructions included.

Style Variation

The designs of vinyl fencing are diverse and can suit and home or property. They can be used practically or to even simply add that beautiful and classic white picket look.

Vinyl fencing can be a great option, even for those who prefer the beautiful texture of wood fencing, but do not have time for its constant maintenance. Timberland Fencing is a type of vinyl PVC fencing that imitates wood grain in texture and coloring. There are even different wood grains available.

Personal Preferences

When choosing your vinyl fencing, an important aspect along with the quality to consider is if the company offers the type of vinyl fencing you would prefer. Ponder the coloring and design of the landscape where the fence is going and plan your new addition accordingly. Certain companies will only specialize in certain types and there is a broad selection of vinyl fencing available.

The most popular designs are picket vinyl fencing and privacy vinyl fencing. Always consider your personal feelings when choosing the color, gate design, and even height. There are times that height is a necessity and

Quality is in the Maintenance

Over time anything is bound to need repairs. Vinyl fencing will last longer than its wooden counterparts, but will still need some regular attention to stay in pristine condition.

After purchasing a quality fence, some make the mistake of not doing weekly cleaning and a quick sweep of the condition of their fence. Do not assume your vinyl fence is impenetrable, a quality fence can deteriorate just as any anything, if not looked after.

High-Quality Vinyl Fencing

Making a large a purchase can be intimidating and with all of the options of fencing around, it can be difficult to settle on one type. After carefully picking your design and texture style of pvc vinyl fencing, decide what company presents the best quality product for the price. Do not shy away from asking the advice of a professional in vinyl fencing that is knowledgeable on how to tell which vinyl fencing is the best quality.

Researching before running to your nearest improvement store can be the most important beginning step. A quality vinyl fence can be chosen quickly and efficiently if you look for the specific qualities that have been laid out. With all of the options offered in vinyl fencing, there is sure to be one in a complimentary design that will have the specs to have a sustainable, long lifetime.

Fencing laws will dictate various technical measurements of a fence. States, cities, and counties all have their own zoning laws which you will need to look into before installing a fence. Without proper approval, you could be subject to fines or forced to remove the fence. There are many factors that may require different rules so it is best to be familiar with what aspects will be important.

These laws are not just in place of safety, or city regulation, but are for your neighbors. A fence that is an eye-sore can be detrimental to your relationship with fellow members of your close society. Make smart design choices, and touch up on your knowledge of all of the rules that will pop-up along the process.

Fence Laws

Exact laws vary by state, but there are overarching concepts and similarities that carry through most fencing regulations. These are important to take into account before you make concrete plans to build a fence. There could be circumstances in the way that need cleared up before construction.

Height Limits

In residential areas, the height limits of fences differ between the front and backyard. The limit is six feet in the backyard, and four feet in the front yard. These standards are easy to follow because of the regulations in place. Fencing companies will usually only present fences in those ranges for residential use.

Privacy fences are a common addition to homes, but it can be dangerous if the fence reaches an unsteady height. Also, the more surface area on a fence the more susceptible it will be to wind damage. If that were the case, large pieces are more likely to do damage to a neighbors property nearby.

Prohibited Materials

For the most part, if you’re buying a fence, forbidden fence material will be taken care of for you. However, it is important to mention you cannot build an electric chain link fence topped with razor wire in most neighborhoods. Designs such as this are dangerous to everyone around.

If you are completely restoring or making your own fence, do not proceed without looking for what is forbidden by state regulations, and even more specific neighborhood rules. If the cost, labor, and maintenance of a wood fence scares you, know there are self-installable vinyl fencing made of vinyl which is an approved fence material. Even chain link fencing will produce a smoother installation with approved metals.

Fence Maintenance

Taking on a new addition to your home is a responsibility. Even if you follow all the other guidelines to install your fence you will still have to keep it in sufficient condition. In a debacle, repairing a fence can cost a bit of time and mone, but it will need to be fixed.

This can lead to wondering what to do if a fence is in between the property lines of yours and a neighbor’s house. Often by just discussing the issue with a neighbor you will be able to find a solution that works for both of you. If not you may have to find the exact property line to determine whose responsibility it is.

Fence Building Requirements

The process of building a fence has its own set of rules accompanying it. For instance, if the fence you intend to build is on a property line, it is polite to notify your neighbors. There are communities, or states that have particular rules. California State Law dictates you must have written notice prepared thirty days before installation.

In other states you simply must build a fence, or any structure, a certain distance away from from the property line to avoid any disputes over incurring on other’s property. If the fence is being installed professionally, remember the noise levels and keep them at a minimum to be a conscience neighbor.

‘Ugly’ Fences

When a design goes against the cohesiveness of neighborhood, it could propose problems. This usually goes for bright colors or over the top themed designs. Some subdivisions and communities will have direct and strict rules to follow for the design of your fence. If you have a homeowners association in your area check what guidelines they have in place for your neighborhood.

‘Spite Fences’

To build an ugly structure in spite of another neighbor or the entire neighborhood is considered malicious. Some states have laws that govern these minor squabbles. You cannot try to force your neighbor out by obnoxiously decking your house out in their rival football team’s colors and logos. This also includes building a taller fence right up against your neighbors because you don’t like theirs, the small area in between can attract pests and wildlife to your community.

Property Lines

It is commonly know that to build a fence, you must do so on your property. This is where property lines come into consideration. If the only viable option is to build a fence where your neighbors’ and your property lines meet, talk to your neighbor. You could very well end up only splitting the cost if they are interested in the addition of a fence.

Fence Repairs

We have already covered the regular maintenance of a fence, but if a fence because dilapidated, it is important to repair immediately. If you have a dog then it is your responsibility to fix the fence if a law requires a fenced in yard with possession of an animal. If you have a pool and the fence breaks to reveal it, even if the fence is shared property, it is your job to take care of it. This falls on you because the pool is the reason the fence must exist.

Natural Vegetation

There are situations where the maintenance of a fence can be tricky to keep to standard. Most state regulations take vegetation into consideration, as well as other geological structures like lakes or excessive hills. More time is allowed in these situations to keep a fence’s proper appearance.

Prepare For a Fence Installation

Making the decision to purchase and install a fence is the beginning of a lot of planning and organizing. Certain things need done beforehand. If there are any state or city regulations on zoning in your area be sure you know what you are and aren’t allowed to do.

The first and most important step is to plan and measure exactly what area the fence will cover. This way when purchasing materials for your fence you won’t end up with too much or too little. Clear this area of any debris or possible obstructions to save time and energy when it comes time to install. Finding rocks too big to move manually, or hard slopes on your property will help you decide if something needs to change before investing.

Research Fencing

Learning all of the rules required for building a fence may overshadow the actual fence you are installing. Take time to look into different fencing options and see what works best for you. There are many modern options online some buyers may not know to consider.

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl Fencing is a cost efficient fencing option that comes in a variety of designs and colors. This type of fence is sturdier and easier to install than a traditional wooden fence, and its variety of styles can match any buyer.

Vinyl fencing can by-step most rules pertaining to design, and since so many are offered there are sure to be a style that will fit your tastes and the neighborhood’s regulations. The upfront cost is cheaper and installation can be easily done over a couple days. The real cherry on top is the little effort it takes to maintain maintenance laws. The sturdy nature of the pvc vinyl fence will withstand harsh weather conditions and stay standing legally for years to come.

DIY Fence Building Tips

Here are few tips that will help you while starting to build a fence.

If your specific needs are for a fence that is outside of regulation, consider contacting the zoning board who can make a judgement on your case.

Get help from friends or family to turn the work into a fun project together.

Even shrubs or trees that create solid boundaries count as fences.

Do not let design get in the way of quality. Do not settle for a subpar fence because it is the only one that follows color regulations.

Wood fences require much more maintenance to continue meeting appearance standards.

Regulated Fencing

If you’ve come to the conclusion that a fence is just what you need, taking the time to research beforehand will give you the information and tools you need to successful install a regulated fence. Modern fences and self installation can save a lot of money, but if your fence isn’t installed properly to begin with, you could end up paying more to fix the issues.

Checking all neighborhood guidelines will make sure you do not build a fence that is against certain protocol. Also, it is never a good idea to have all of your neighbor’s angry at you.

If you are considering fencing options for your home or property, you’ve probably heard great things about DIY vinyl fences. Vinyl fences are becoming more and more popular as the go-to option for home and property fencing. There are many reasons that you might choose DIY vinyl fences for your home, but first, we’re going to go into why vinyl fencing is superior to wooden fencing. You could build yourself a wooden fence, but we’re here to tell you exactly why you should go with vinyl instead.

Benefits Of Vinyl Fencing and DIY

Vinyl fencing is becoming extremely popular as savvy homeowners seek a cost-effective way to border their yard that is both functional and good-looking. Vinyl fencing fits this bill perfectly. There are dozens of benefits to owning a vinyl fence and there are also many reasons why you may choose to have a vinyl fence.

For starters, vinyl fencing is going to be much more durable than wooden fencing or other types of fencing. Vinyl fencing is suitable for all types of weather and you don’t have to weather treat it every year for it to maintain its good look. It can stand up to a lot of types of abuse and is going to keep its shape, integrity, and color much better than some other types of fencing.

Vinyl fencing also looks better than other types of fences. Think about it. Your alternatives for fencing are wood and chain-link. Wooden fences can look beautiful to start with, but as the years go on they are going to become broken down and will require a lot of maintenance if you want them to remain. Chain-link fences are effective, but quite ugly. You don’t want to look at a chain-link fence when you look out into your beautiful yard and you also don’t want to see a broken down wooden fence. Vinyl fencing is a clear option when it comes to appearances.

You’re also going to see much more versatility when it comes to vinyl fencing. You can get DIY vinyl fencing in many different designs, colors, and textures to suit your exact specifications and desires to match your home’s color or yard décor. If you want a fence that you can customize, DIY vinyl fences are the way to go.

If you are looking for a DIY fence, vinyl is going to be the easiest material to work with. It is lighter than wood or metal so it will be easier to transport, carry, and customize. It’s also a much easier material to work with if you are wanting to cut it or make alterations. Wood and metal are heavy and a much bigger hassle to customize to the point that you want them. DIY vinyl fences are the easiest to work with if you are working on your fence without the help of a contractor.

From a maintenance standpoint, DIY vinyl fences are also easier to tend to than all other types of fences. If the fence is broken or breached, it can take hours to repair a wooden or metal fence. You may even have to call a contractor or professional to fix your fence. However, if you need to make a small repair to a vinyl fence, you can usually do this with no problems. The material is light and easy to work with. If you put the fence up yourself, you should be able to make all necessary repairs as well. This is yet another reason why people love working with DIY vinyl fences.

And finally, if you get a DIY fence you won’t have to just trust that a contractor is charging you a fair amount. You can pay for the materials you need and use your own labor to put up the fence. If you are on a budget, this is a great way to save some money and still get a fence that looks great and lasts for decades. DIY vinyl fences take the guesswork out of buying fencing, as well. You know what you’re going to spend right away and you don’t have to wait for the bill from the contractor.

Styles of DIY Fences

One of the great things about DIY vinyl fences is that you have a lot of control over your fencing and what it looks like. There are several different styles of DIY vinyl fences that you can choose. You can choose different options based on appearance, functionality, or anything else that you want. With wood or metal fencing, this would be a long process and since the material is hard to work with, you may not even be able to do it by yourself. But with vinyl fencing, this type of DIY customization is made possible. You simply order the parts for the style of fencing that you want, wait for them to come in, and you install the fencing. Let’s go through the different styles of fencing that are available to you when you consider DIY vinyl fences for your yard or property.

Privacy Vinyl Fences

The first and most popular of the vinyl fences are privacy fences. Privacy fences are a simple, effective design. They typically feature high walls that are not permeable. You cannot see through them at any point. They are great for exactly what their name implies—privacy. They can keep your pets and children contained and your annoying neighbors out. They’re also great if you’re near a busy road and don’t want to hear/see the hustle and bustle of the traffic nearby.

Lattice Top Vinyl Fences

The lattice top is a popular design that is similar to privacy fences, but they feature a see-through topping of usually a foot. It is laced with a lattice pattern and allows you to see through to the other side a little better. These fences serve all the same functions as a regular privacy fence but they allow for more visibility and some people prefer the look and design.

Ranch Rail Vinyl Fences

Ranch rail is a classic, highly desirable design. It’s used most commonly in the country but would look great in almost any setting. Used mostly for appearance, the ranch rail design is short and features horizontal boards usually grouped in 3. You can see through it easily and it wouldn’t be very effective in containing children or pets, but it looks great. This is probably one of the easier designs to do yourself.

Picket Top Vinyl Fences

The picket top fence is very similar to the lattice top. It is similar to the privacy fence as well, except it features a decorative top. Instead of the lattice, it is vertical posts that resemble the classic look of a picket fence. This design crosses the effectiveness of a privacy fence with the classic look and decorative qualities of a picket fence.

Open Picket Vinyl Fences

This is a classic look. The open picket fence features vertical planks that overshoot the top horizontal plank by a few inches. It’s a classic look that won’t ever go out of style. Does great to form a loose boundary around your home. It can keep children and pets inside while still being able to enjoy the views. Passersby are sure to marvel at your great looking DIY vinyl picket fence. Guests will be amazed that you did it yourself!

Scalloped Picket Vinyl Fences

The scalloped variation of a standard picket fence uses vertical planks of varying lengths to make the top border form a curve. This is where it gets its name because the shape resembles a scallop shell. This has all the functionality of a picket fence, it’s just a different design.

Closed Picket Vinyl Fences

The last of the picket fence variations, these planks do not surpass the height of the horizontal top border at all. They stop at the top for a clean, simple look. Again, this fence serves all the same functions as a traditional picket fence but just has a different spin on the design.

DIY Vinyl Fences Maintenance

If you choose to go with a DIY vinyl fence, congratulations! You made a great choice. There are just a couple of things that you should know about your fence so that it stays looking great for a long time. You can wash it down each year with a hose. If there is dirt and grime that stays on it after the rinse, you can easily take a rag and soap to it and that should fix your problem. You should never lean or let children lean on the swinging gate to your fence. That’s just asking for a broken hinge. And finally, when you are doing lawn work, avoid making direct contact with the vinyl fence while using a weed-whacker or other lawn tools. You can damage the bottom of your fence by doing that.

The Verdict

DIY vinyl fences are some of the best solutions out there for hands-on people who want a vinyl fence. They are easy to work with, easy to order, and can be much more affordable than a regular vinyl fence while still getting the same quality of the material. The customizability and durability make DIY vinyl fences a better option than wood, metal, or nearly any other material on the market and they can easily be the accent piece that your home or property needs.

Residential fencing offers many benefits to property owners. For starters, it adds aesthetic value to your property which can be useful if you ever decide to resell your home. A good residential fence can improve your level of privacy, help keep stray animals out while also preventing your pets from escaping.

Another substantial benefit to installing a residential fence is they can help you to accurately establish property lines.

In the State of Minnesota, there are rules and regulations all property owners must follow when they install new fencing. It’s important to understand these rules before you even get started looking at materials or comparing installation costs.

What Homeowners Should Know About Residential Fencing Laws

One of the biggest issues all homeowners face when it comes to installing a new residential fence is a dispute with their neighbors over the accurate property line. We have all heard the saying “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors”. One of the main reasons why so many people choose to install a new fence is privacy from their neighbors. Therefore, when you install a new fence, you want it to sit exactly on the property line.

There are also several other issues that homeowners deal with if their neighbors aren’t happy with their new fencing. Some neighbors may complain about the material you used or claim that it doesn’t do anything to improve the aesthetic value of the neighborhood. Your neighbors may also be required to trim their trees so your new fence may be installed.

As a properly owner, you have every right to install a new fence on your property, regardless of how much your neighbor disagrees. The most prominent issue that homeowners face is the disagreement over property lines. That’s because no one wants their next-door neighbor placing a fence on what is supposed to be their property. Once that dispute is settled, you should not have any issues related to the rules and regulations for residential fencing in Minnesota.

What are the Fence Laws in Minnesota?

There are several fence laws and regulations for homeowners in the state of Minnesota.

Partition Fences – Expenses, Equal Shares, Adjoining Owners

Any time all or a portion of the land is improved or used, and one or both individuals wish to build a fence, both parties must build and maintain the partition fence equally.

Failure to Build, Rebuild, or Repair Costs

If one party refuses to build, rebuild or repair the fence, and they are required by law to do so, the other party has the right to take their dispute to the fence viewers.

If one party performs maintenance or repairs to the fence, and makes these repairs acceptable to the fence viewers, the home owner may recover the repair costs from the other party.

Tree Damages

If someone cuts down or damages a property owner’s tree. That person is liable to the owner for damages.

The Difference Between a Partition Fence and a Division Fence

There are two different types of fences Minnesota home owners can have installed on their properties, a partition fence and a division fence. A partition fence is one located either on or near the boundary line for the two properties typically both property owners share the cost of the installation for this fence. A division fence is different because there are no shared-cost obligations involved.

The laws for a partition fence in Minnesota apply whenever neighbors disagree in popular disputes such as the need for a fence or the correct division of costs for installation, repairing, maintenance, and materials.

In the State of Minnesota, the expenses for a partition fence should be shared between both parties, as well as the cost for repairs and maintenance. If a dispute arises, the individual who pays for the fence is allowed to recover the losses from their non-paying neighbor in court.

What is a Fence Viewer?

Fence Viewer is the official title given to the individual in charge of overseeing neighborhood fence disputes. The early New England law term was once used to help solve disputes among property owners with livestock. Those with adjoining properties would often complain about livestock roaming over to their land.

Today, the exact needs for a fence viewer may be different, but they are still very important. These days, the title is often given to either a city or county commissioner or another local individual who holds public office. It is their duty to hear, assess and decide all boundary fence disputes for the area. In most cases, homeowners must pay a general fee to the fence viewer for their services.

How to Avoid a Property Line Dispute

Property line disputes are not as common today as they once were. This is because of the advancements in record keeping and well-defined property lines. It is easier to avoid a property line dispute these days by hiring a surveyor to examine the line and show both parties where the property lines lie. Of course, this will not take care of issues such as figuring out how to split the costs for a partition fence or trimming trees. But, hiring a surveyor can help make a big difference if there is a misunderstanding over where the property line lies.

Why Vinyl Fencing is a Great Choice for your Residential Property

When it is time to choose the best fencing material for your new residential fence, there are several options available to you. One of the best options in terms of value, price, and long-lasting durability is vinyl fencing.

Vinyl fencing can offer the same aesthetic value as a rich cedar wood fence, but with so many more advantages over the years. Wood paneling and fencing material is known to rot due to the harsh Minnesota climate. Most people who own this type of fencing will end up paying out more in maintenance costs than their fence is actually worth.

When you use vinyl material for your residential fencing needs, you get a fence that will help keep your pets and family safe and add a touch of beauty to your property without the disadvantages that a wooden fence provides.

What is Vinyl Fencing Material?

Vinyl fencing material is made up of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) It may be combined with other types of ingredients to create this strong and smooth weather-resistant fencing choice. The durability of vinyl fencing material makes it a good choice for all types of outdoor DIY projects.

When it comes to upfront costs, vinyl fencing material is more expensive than wood. But when you consider the amount of repairs and maintenance you must perform on wooden fences throughout the years, you will find that you end up saving money by paying out more for PVC fence installation. Vinyl is known to last much longer than wooden fences and it offers greater value to all types of homeowners.

Here are a few reasons why you should consider vinyl fencing material.

Affordable

Vinyl fencing may not be the cheapest option up front but when you compare the overall cost for this material to others, you will find that it is quite affordable. Vinyl PVC fencing material can be made in bulk quantities in factories all throughout the country, which makes it more sustainable than wood. It is also easier to transport than wood or steel fencing materials which can help lower the total cost as well.

Aesthetic Value

When you own a home, you want it to look its very best both inside and out. A new vinyl fence will give your property more curb appeal, increase the aesthetic value and improve the look of your neighborhood overall. Vinyl fencing provides the option of adding classic neutral tones or a burst of color to your home that is eye-catching and beautiful. You can choose from solid fencing panels or those that feature a wood-like texture.

Little to No Maintenance

PVC fencing material is durable and long lasting, it is designed to withstand the warm summer heat as well as ongoing rain and frigid temperatures. This type of weather can cause severe damage to wooden fences over time, but vinyl fencing will not rot or start to look worn down after several years of exposure to the elements. It is worth taking the time to find out more about investing in vinyl fencing because you will end up saving yourself time and money on the cost of maintenance and repairs.

Two of the most popular choices for residential fencing include wood and vinyl fencing. While they both provide you with security, privacy and aesthetic value for your home, there are some disadvantages which cause many homeowners to choose vinyl fencing instead of wood.

Many people choose vinyl fencing because unlike wood, it is a low-maintenance material that is affordable and will not deteriorate from exposure to the outdoor elements.

Why You Should Choose Vinyl Fencing

If you are considering installing a fence around your property, you want to invest in a product that is strong, durable, and long lasting.

While a wooden fence may have its advantages, the benefits of installing a vinyl fence on your property are far greater.

That’s because wooden fences require more maintenance over the years than those made from vinyl fence panels. That fact alone can make them more expensive. Wood fence panels must be treated, stained, and painted regularly or else they will take away from the aesthetic value of your residence.

Over time, wood that is constantly exposed to harsh outdoor elements will begin to rot if it isn’t treated. This will result in a fence that isn’t strong or durable, and one that may need to be replaced sooner than later.

Vinyl fencing can help raise your property’s value which is a great benefit if you plan to sell in the near future. Because it is low maintenance and doesn’t deteriorate over time as much as wood, you can be assured that your home with maintain its high curb appeal when you choose to install vinyl fencing.

If you own a wooden fence, you can expect to perform maintenance on it every two to three years. That’s additional time and money you would not have to spend if you had a vinyl fence instead of wood privacy fence panels.

Vinyl Vs. Wood Fence – Which is the Best Fencing Material?

When it comes to wood vs. vinyl material for your fencing, wood is a very tough competitor. It may require more maintenance which causes it to be more expensive over time, but it is still a very popular choice for many homeowners. So which one is the best option for you?

Wood has that classic, traditional look that man homeowners desire for their fencing. But it also must compete with the high-tech advancements of vinyl fencing. Today, you can enjoy the best of both worlds with the strength and durability of vinyl that has the look and texture of real cedar wood.

But even with all the options and advancements of vinyl fencing material, many people are still convinced that wood fencing is the best option. Simply because it is the standard, go-to choice for so many homeowners.

But once you start looking at all the benefits associated with vinyl fencing, it is clear what the best choice is. It is long-lasting, requires little maintenance, has impressive strength, and can be purchased in a broad range of colors and styles.

One downside to vinyl fencing is that it costs more up front than wood or other types of fencing materials. But when you factor in how long it lasts, and the low level of repairs or maintenance you need to perform, you will see that installing a vinyl fence will help you save money over time.

How Much Does a Vinyl Fence Cost vs. Wood?

Wood and vinyl fencing are available in a broad range of styles, and the style that you choose can greatly affect the total cost of both the materials needed and the installation.

One of the most common materials used for wooden fences is pressure-treated pine wood. They are ideal for wood picket fence panels. While it may be a great affordable option, it doesn’t last as long as other wood types that are priced higher. The average cost for wooden fences range between $3 and $6 per linear foot for a split rail fence and between $9 and $18 per linear foot for a wood privacy fence.

Vinyl fence materials cost more than wood up front, but they last longer and require very little maintenance. This makes them an affordable long-term option. The price per linear foot for vinyl fencing costs on average $20 to $35. If you add in installation costs at $40 to $60 per hour, you are looking at anywhere from $14k to $20k for your vinyl fence installation cost for a 209 yard fence.

What are the Advantages to Wood Fencing?

Low cost of materials

Classic appearance and style

Repairs are usually easy and inexpensive

What are the Advantages to Vinyl Fencing?

Provide better privacy options

Long lasting

Durable

Easy to clean and maintain

Saves you money over time

What are the Pros and Cons of Vinyl vs. Wood Fencing?

To help you make the best decision for your residential fencing, here are the pros and cons of vinyl vs. wood.

Vinyl

Vinyl fencing maintains its like-new appearance much longer than wood. You can purchase it in a variety of formats including panels or decorative toppers. It is available in many different colors and styles to suit your preference.

The downside to vinyl is overall, the look can be less appealing than wood for many homeowners. While it is offered with wood-like textures, the synthetic appearance stands out when placed against the natural outdoor background.

Wood

Wood fencing appeals to a large group of homeowners who prefer the natural and classic look. It blends in well with the outdoor environment and foliage. You can purchase it in various styles such as picket or split rail fencing. Usually, wood fencing is more affordable to purchase up front, and wood fence installation cost is often less as well.

The downside to wood fencing is how quickly it an degrade over time. This causes a very negative impact on this material because if it is not maintained, a degraded wooden fence can cause your property’s curb value to drop. This is especially important to anyone who may consider selling their home in the future.

6 Reasons to Choose Vinyl Fencing

There are many reasons why you should consider a vinyl fence over a wooden fence. Here are six of the top reasons for you to think about.

Low-Maintenance

Vinyl fencing does not require as much maintenance as wood fencing over the years. It will not rot, splinter, or warp due to exposure to the elements. It also will not blister or peel like wood material.

You never need to sand or stain a vinyl fence. Vinyl fences also do not need to be painted to maintain their aesthetic quality like a wooden fence. The only maintenance you need to perform with vinyl fencing is washing it using a garden hose on a routine basis to keep it looking its best.

An Abundance of Styles, Textures, and Colors

Vinyl fencing is available in many different styles, colors, and textures. You can choose a combination of different shades and designs to ensure that your fence looks unique from all others in the neighborhood.

This material is available with wood grain textures to give your fence the appearance of natural wood fencing. You also have the option to choose from a bold color palette that will make your property stand out.

Color and Fade Protection

A wooden fence will look great right after it is freshly painted or stained. But over time, that paint will chip and the stain will fade. Vinyl fencing material, however, will maintain it’s bright and beautiful colors for many years.

This material is treated to prevent fading and features an added layer of protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. When you choose to install a vinyl fence instead of a wooden fence, you get the advantage of enjoying a fence that looks brand new for years to come. Plus, you also get the added advantage of all the latest vinyl fence colors to choose from.

Stronger with More Flexibility

Many homeowners looking for more fencing options are not aware of the strength and flexibility of vinyl. It is much stronger and more flexible than wood. That allows it to endure impacts from occasional run-ins with lawn equipment or tree limbs and still maintain its beauty.

This can be a great advantage if you ever decide to sell your property after installing your new fence. You will not have to worry about replacing the fence to improve the overall beauty and value of your residence, which will help gain attention of potential buyers.

Affordable and Cost-Effective

Another benefit to installing vinyl fencing over wood is the fact that it is so affordable and cost effective. Even the very best premium vinyl fencing costs less than you may think. Also, because they do not require as much maintenance, vinyl fencing will even save you money over time.

Easy to Install

Vinyl fences can be very easy to install and they are no problem to repair or replace if needed. Aside from securing the posts into the ground, installing a vinyl fence requires very little work. Whether you decide to do-it-yourself or hire a professional to take care of the job for you, installing a vinyl fence will not take long and will also require less effort.

For enclosing a backyard or pool area, many homeowners choose wood or vinyl fencing over chain link or wrought iron, for the extra security that solid fences provide. A wood or vinyl fence will not only keep unwanted visitors out of your yard, but will also protect you and your family from the prying eyes of nosy neighbors and potential intruders. Slatted fences do not have ready footholds like chain link fences, making them much more difficult to climb, both for people and animals. If you have a large dog, or one that is prone to climbing, a wood or vinyl fence will be more effective in keeping him contained, and may help control excessive barking by reducing outside stimuli.

Once you have decided to install a privacy fence, you must decide on the type of fencing material will best suit your needs and budget. Many homeowners choose cedar fencing for its durability and resistance to insects and rotting, Vinyl, however, is an excellent alternative to cedar – here are some factors to consider before making a final decision:

Cost

The least expensive type of fencing, of course, is chain link. Chain link fences can keep pets in and neighborhood children out, but they do not offer much privacy. Solid fences made of wood or vinyl offer the best security and privacy, with costs varying according to the type of materials used. They may cost more than chain link, but offer many advantages that may make the extra cost worthwhile. Pine fences are less expensive than pressure-treated or hardwood fences, but are not as durable. You will have a lower initial cost outlay, but will spend more on repairs, and will have to replace your fence much sooner. Hardwood, pressure treated wood, and vinyl fencing are far superior, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain or snow.

Vinyl fencing does usually cost more to install than pressure-treated or cedar fencing. In some cases, however, the difference in installation costs may be less than you might expect. For example, if the fence is installed on a particularly uneven property, a wood fence may require a lot of onsite custom cutting and fitting. Vinyl fencing can also be custom fitted to an uneven area, but, since the fencing comes in prefabricated sections rather than individual slats, the custom fitting may involve lower labor costs.

While the initial installation cost of your fence is an important factor to consider, remember that you will expect the fence to last for many years. In the long run, vinyl and cedar fencing will end up costing about the same.

Maintenance

While a vinyl fence will often cost more initially, once installed, it is virtually maintenance-free. Cedar wood is resistant to rotting and insects, but not completely impervious. Eventually, all wood fences will succumb to the elements, especially in areas that are prone to hard freezes. Wood that is covered in ice, snow, or water for extended periods of time will warp, decay, and become discolored. Sections of your wood fence may need to be replaced periodically, and, eventually, the entire fence may need to be replaced. Vinyl, on the other hand, can withstand even the worst weather conditions and maintain its original strength and beauty. Even before the fence suffers any damage or wear, wood must be painted or stained periodically to keep its appearance. Cedar wood has a red color that will turn grey over time, as part of its natural aging process. In order to maintain its red color, the wood must be treated with stain. Every few years, or more often if weather conditions are extreme, the fence will need a new coat of stain. Vinyl, on the other hand, requires no paint, stain, or treatment. Impervious to insects and rot, it will also maintain its color indefinitely. You can easily clean your vinyl fence by wiping it down with a cloth or spraying it with water, but regular cleaning is not essential. Dirt does not penetrate the surface, and will not lead to decay. Modern durable vinyls resist cracking and can withstand direct impacts without breaking. We are so confident in the ability of our vinyl fences to withstand all weather conditions and to provide decades of maintenance-free service that we offer a lifetime warranty on our materials.

Aesthetics

Many people choose wood fencing because they like its appearance. A new cedar fence is beautiful, and the natural red color can be maintained by applying and renewing a coat of stain from time to time. Without treatment, all wood fences will fade and weather, changing color significantly over time. Many homeowners don’t realize that vinyl fencing is also available in a variety of colors and textures. In addition to the clean, white vinyl that everyone is familiar with, we feature a line of fences that includes a variety of colors that are virtually indistinguishable from wood, but without the disadvantages. Your vinyl fence will not weather or fade significantly, and will look almost the same in 20 years as it did the day it was installed.

Durability

Vinyl fences will withstand the test of time, but how do they hold up under high impacts or wind? If you live in an area that occasionally experiences high winds, or if you are just looking for extra security, your vinyl fence can be installed with premium fence posts that will withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. In a windstorm of particularly strong gust, your fence will not blow over. Even if a panel is damaged in a high wind, it is easily repaired, at a fraction of what it would cost to repair a wood fence that was subjected to the same conditions.

Do you like the idea of a vine-covered fence? Decorative vines can enhance your fence’s appearance and add an extra bit of privacy, but climbing vines can wreak havoc on cedar fences. Whether it is an invasive vine or a carefully planned decorative flowering vine, it can work its way into wood slats, causing gaps and reducing the lifespan of the fence. Vinyl fences, on the other hand, are a great choice for homeowners who want to plant a climbing vine, or live in an area where honeysuckle, ivy, and other invasive climbing vines are common. The vine will not affect the structural integrity of your vinyl fence. Climbing vines will also create humidity, leading to algae growth and rot on a cedar fence. Vinyl fences are not affected by humidity and do not rot. Any algae growth can be easily removed with soap and water, but even if you do not remove algae, it will not cause structural damage to your vinyl fence. Insects can also be a problem with a vine-covered cedar fence. Although resistant to insects, cedar is no completely insect-proof. Over time, insect damage is possible. This is not the case with vinyl fencing. Insects will not eat or burrow into vinyl fence posts or panels, so feel free to plant some climbing roses, wisteria, or clematis.

Safety

Many people choose wood or vinyl fences over the less expensive chain link because of the extra security those types of fences provide. Both types of fencing are harder to climb, making it more difficult for intruders to enter your yard. Both types also offer the added security of blocking the view of your yard from the street, or from adjoining property. Because wood fences are made up of individual slats, though, it may be easier for intruders to pry several slats loose to gain entry to your property. Vinyl fences look like they are made up of individual slats, but are actually made up of larger sections that fit together like puzzle pieces. The slats cannot be removed individually, making it more difficult to penetrate.

Your dog may be able to claw or even chew through a wooden fence over time, but he will not be able to get through a vinyl fence with teeth or claws.

All wood fences are prone to splintering, which could pose a danger to children and pets. Vinyl fences will not crack or splinter, even with the worst punishment your children and pets can deal out!

Another threat to wood fences is fire. If a tree, a neighbor’s house, or even the fence itself is struck by lightning, or if an intruder or vandal decides to deliberately start a fire, a cedar fence will burn, posing a danger to your home. Vinyl fences are fire-proof, allowing you some extra peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

Don’t let the higher installation cost of vinyl fencing scare you away. With many financing options available, a Northland vinyl fence can fit in your budget and deliver a lifetime of maintenance-free service to your family. A vinyl fence will add to the value of your home if you decide to sell, and will be there for the life of your home if you do not. Contact us for a free estimate today.

Standard colors are the most popular options for vinyl fencing. All standard colors are non-textured, meaning that each appears as a solid color, and are highly affordable. The simplistic look of standard colors works well for a range of fencing needs, and the low cost of these colors is a major plus.

White, tan, clay, and slate gray are the available standard colors for vinyl fencing. These colors create a well-rounded selection of vinyl fencing shade options so that everyone can find an affordable option that will suit their needs.

Here’s an overview of each available standard color for vinyl fencing so that you may decide which ones could work for you:

White provides a classic, timeless look that’s beautiful for residential areas. While white fencing is more susceptible to getting dirty than darker colors, the traditional style it offers is desired by many homeowners. Plus, white fencing makes colorful landscaping or a vibrantly painted home pop–white fencing may be seen as a blank canvas that allows the special features of your residence to shine.

Tan is a light color for vinyl fencing that will coordinate well with many different home designs. As a gentle neutral, tan fencing will likely adhere to many HOA guidelines and is a safe bet for all types of homes.

Clay vinyl fencing provides a slightly darker tone than tan without appearing harsh or dark. This gray/brown colors will work well for homeowners wanting a deep, understated fencing tone. One notable upside to clay vinyl fencing is that it won’t show any accumulated dirt or grime as easily as a white or tan fence, which are paler in color.

Slate gray is a modern and attractive vinyl fencing color. This relatively dark tone will add a nice touch to many differently designed residences and will require very little maintenance.

Timberland Colors

To achieve the visual interest of a wooden fence without having to deal with the involved maintenance required by wooden fencing, consider an option from the Timberland color series. The Timberland colors are inspired by different varieties of wooden fencing for a high-quality and authentic look. The deep, textured, and varied tones of the Timberland series can add a singular touch to the exterior of your home.

Vinyl colors from the Timberland collection are pricier than standard colors. The higher price of the Timberland colors is due to the faux-wood effect that each of these special colors provides. To save money on these fantastic vinyl fencing color options, consider purchasing only the exact quantity you need, instead of large quantities at once.

The available Timberland colors are:

Dark walnut

Textured tan

Weathered aspen

Textured clay

Driftwood

Textured driftwood

Dark sequoia

As mentioned above, Timberland vinyl fencing colors provide the look of a wooden fence without requiring the same high level of maintenance. But, what exactly does maintaining a wooden fence require? Wooden fences are greatly affected by weather, from the rays of the sun to heavy rainfall or snow and everything in between. Sunlight will, over time, cause fading and discoloration in wooden fences, so a cleaner or brightener and sealant will have to be used and reapplied as years go by. Rain and snow will cause shrinking, twisting, swelling, and warping. Mildew growth is another concern with wooden fences, especially in humid environments. Even with careful maintenance, a wooden fence will warp at least a little bit over time–there is simply no way around it. That’s where Timberland colors come in, providing the attractive aesthetic of a wooden fence without the high risk for damage.

Understanding Dark vs. Light Colors for Vinyl Fencing

When it comes to vinyl fencing, dark and light colors react differently. With outdoor fencing, product expansion and contraction are inevitable with changing weather and temperatures. As the seasons change, your vinyl fencing will change as well, so it’s important to understand how the color you select will be affected.

Dark colors absorb more heat from the sun than light colors. As a result, darker vinyl fencing colors will move, shift, and react more dramatically to warm, sunny weather than light colors will. White fencing is the least susceptible to change due to heat and sunlight, which is why it is such a popular color for outdoor fencing, and has been for many, many years. This doesn’t mean that dark vinyl colors aren’t great choices for fencing, but it is a fact that you should be aware of.

Quality in Vinyl Colors

After you’ve selected the best vinyl color for your fencing installation, consider the quality of the product you’re purchasing. Quality is crucial when you’re shopping around for fencing because you must ensure that the product is built to last. The outdoor elements inevitably cause wear-and-tear in fencing, whether it be rain, hail, snow, or sunshine.

Different climates have different effects on fencing. Vinyl fencing is basically constructed from plastic materials and is therefore better equipped to withstand a range of harsh weather conditions. Its ability to last through many types of weather without incurring damage is one of the main benefits of vinyl fencing.

Look for vinyl fencing colors that are made using non-ferrous pigments. Non-ferrous pigments don’t contain iron; this provides the highest level of quality by withstanding weathering over extended periods of time. In addition, non-ferrous pigments achieve a high level of batch-to-batch consistency in vinyl fencing colors.

In addition, seek out vinyl fencing with little to no maintenance, no matter what color you choose. If fencing is not built to be durable, the color may change, peel, rust, or corrode. Having to repaint, restain, or manage fence rotting is a major hassle that can cost you a significant amount of money. But, you can avoid the inconvenience of having to maintain your fencing by selecting a top-quality vinyl fencing product from the get-go.

Conclusion

Vinyl fencing colors come in many shades and tones, offering something for every property owner. Gone are the days when a white picket fence was the only option; nowadays, there are various available color choices so that you may select the perfect option to enhance the look of your property. Whether you select a classic, affordable standard color or a rich Timberland tone, your fencing will be both attractive and highly durable. Fencing colors are always at risk for fading in the sun, but with a top-notch and well-made vinyl color, you can minimize damage to increase the longevity of your residential fencing.

In review, vinyl colors for vinyl fencing range varying tones of white, gray, and brown. Vinyl fencing colors may be textured or non-textured, with textured options typically being the more expensive options. Dark colors absorb more heat than light colors and will therefore absorb more heat, causing a greater risk of change due to weather.

With so many vinyl color options available to you, there’s sure to be one that will perfectly compliment the aesthetic of your home and landscaping. Consider the information included in this article before making your final choice, and enjoy the lovely shade of your new vinyl fencing!

An establishment never seems complete without a fence…a durable, aesthetic one for that matter. For someone who is looking for these two qualities, a vinyl fence is always a good choice. If you have been eyeing a vinyl fence for any of your fencing projects, this guide is prepared just for you so read on!

Simply Stunning and durable!

Vinyl fences are made from plastic-based material. The fences emerge as superior in terms of aesthetics and durability when compared to other types of fencing such as wood.

Quite unique from other synthetic materials, some of vinyl’s elements such as chlorine and ethylene can be found naturally from trees. This actually means is that unlike any other types of fences, vinyl fences combine both synthetic and natural properties.

The Superiority of Vinyl Fences Over Wood Fences

Considering that each has its own advantages, deciding whether to go with a vinyl or wood fence is always a daunting task. All things considered, however, the advantages of vinyl fences outdo those of wood fences by far. Here are the qualities that make vinyl fences a better option:

Strength

According to scientists, vinyl fences are 6 times stronger than wood. Even with this type of strength, vinyl still remains more flexible than any of the other fencing materials. This flexibility makes installation of vinyl easy and also makes it possible for manufacturers to produce more sophisticated vinyl fence designs.

Ability to withstand weather

All fence structures are under the direct exposure of the ambient weather. As a result of their strength and flexibility, vinyl fences can withstand harsh weather like strong winds, sun heat, or extremely low temperatures.

Easy to clean

Due to exposure to dust and wet soil, fences will become tainted with dirt stains soon after installation. Regular cleaning to keep the fences clean is, therefore, a must. Cleaning is easier with vinyl fences as the surface does not hold on to dirt. All you will need is some water, soap, and a soft brush.

Low maintenance and repair

Due to their flexibility and strength, vinyl fences are less likely to crack under strong pressure which can be caused by daily hustle or harsh weather. This means that repair will be less frequent with vinyl fences than with any other type of fence.

Other types of fences might also require paint right after installation. This is usually to protect the surface from damage by weather. Painting a vinyl fence is not necessary because their resilient surface lasts a lifetime without fading.

More versatility

Vinyl fences offer more customization options in terms of design and color. You can order a custom design or color to match your specific needs straight from the manufacturer.

Eco-friendliness

According to a recent study, vinyl is among the largest sold plastic-based materials worldwide. The study also revealed that manufacturers are opting to produce vinyl over other competitor synthetic materials because its production requires low input in terms of resources and the fact that the process also produces lower emissions to the environment.

After manufacture, most synthetic materials also contain chemicals that might be hazardous to the environment. Vinyl is, however, a clean non-reactive material.

Cheaper in the long run

The initial cost for vinyl fences is usually higher than that of wood and chain link fences. In the long-run, however, vinyl fences require less maintenance because they do not crack, chip, warp, or chalk easily. When we are considering things in the long run, vinyl fences are always the cheaper option.

Resistance to rotting and pests

Wood fences are susceptible to rot and damage by pests. To prevent this damage, wood fences require expensive treatment from time to time. Vinyl fences do not require this type of treatment because they are resistant to bugs and rot.

Steps for Choosing your Vinyl Fence

After deciding to go with a vinyl fence over a wood fence, there are a couple of other decisions that are coming your way. Save you the trouble of rummaging aimlessly over the various styles, colors, and textures, we have prepared a step by step guide for choosing your vinyl fence:

Browse through finished designs for inspiration

Browsing through finished vinyl fence projects is the best source of inspiration when you are looking for the perfect vinyl fence design for your home. You can take a tour in your neighborhood, browse online, or flip through home design magazines for some vinyl fencing ideas.

What’s the purpose of your fence?

Do you want privacy, a barrier for your pool, or a just a fence for keeping pets and toddlers inside the compound? There is a design for each purpose. A picket fence, for instance, will be perfect for someone who wants an uninterrupted view of the surroundings. A privacy fence, on the other hand, blocks the view but is ideal for keeping pets and little kids within the boundaries of your home.

Verdict

As a material, vinyl has proved itself to be valuable for a variety of construction needs. Vinyl fences emerge as dirt free, durable, and cheap in the long run.

If you have been looking for a vinyl fence-based expert, you have come to the right place! On top of having a huge collection of vinyl fence and chain-link fence products, we also answer all the troubling questions you might have to ensure that you are proud and satisfied in the backend.

Fencing has been used for centuries for many different reasons. Now a days, fencing is used to enhance landscaping, define landlines, and keep children and pets safe. While the choice to get a fence may be simple, but then comes the decision on the type of fence you want. The most common types of fences are vinyl fences and wooden fences. Both types of fence materials have their positives and negatives. You should consider both sides of the coin when making your decision.

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing is more modern than wood fencing and has not been around as long. But there are so many vinyl fencing styles and colors available on the market today, that you can find the right fit for any home style. Since the fencing is made from vinyl, there is virtually no up keep and you do not have to worry about pests, termites, and rot. In addition, the styles can accommodate any period of home with vinyl split rail fencing, vinyl fence panels, and even toppers for the vinyl fencing.

Let’s take a look at some of the Pros and Cons of vinyl fencing:

PROS:

There is very little maintenance required for vinyl fencing. At most, you need to occasionally pressure wash it to keep mud and debris off of it.

Vinyl fencing comes in many styles and colors to help fit in with your home’s aesthetic appearance.

You can section off areas of your yard such as pools and decks with vinyl fencing and keep children and pets safe from harm while keeping with the fencing theme and style of your overall yard.

There is no need to repaint the fence as vinyl fencing does not fade or chip.

Vinyl fencing is not susceptible to insects, termites, or rot.

Vinyl fencing is very durable even in high winds. If damage does occur, repairs are fairly easy to make.

CONS:

Due to the type of material, vinyl fencing is more costly upfront than word fencing. However, with low maintenance costs and the long life expectancy of vinyl fencing, the cost factor may not be as much as wood fencing in the lifetime of the vinyl fence.

There are less colors and styles available for vinyl fencing. That being said, with new colors being added all the time and fence styles changing, you are sure to find a style and color that will compliment your home’s style and be aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

In extreme temperatures, a vinyl fence panel may warp and need replacing. If that does occur, repairs to vinyl fencing are easy to make as a panel or vinyl split rail can be replaced at any juncture.

When it comes time to replace a vinyl fence, they may be hard to dispose of due to the materials in the fence. However, the need to replace a vinyl fence in a lifetime is very seldom and some recycling centers will accept the fencing because of the contents of its make-up.

Vinyl fencing has proven over the years to be a reputable material for fencing and continues to make advances in styling while keeping your fence virtually maintenance free. Vinyl fencing that has the appearance of wood is even available.

Wood Fencing

Wood fencing has been around for centuries. Unlike the modern panels, wood fencing began as rough split rails even back in the Civil War. While wood fences have evolved into the modern panels and rails that you see today, they have been unable to make changes in the genetic material to make it as maintenance free as other materials, such as vinyl. Wood fencing does have the advantage of being able to be painted or stained virtually any color and there are plenty of styles to choose from. However, that paint or stain must be maintained and needs to be redone every so often as the color is susceptible to fading and chipping.

We can take a look at the pros and cons of wood fencing for comparison to other materials such as vinyl:

PROS:

Wood fencing has the ability to be painted or stained virtually any color that you can imagine.

Wood fencing is less costly to initially install, however, you must take the cost of upkeep and maintenance into the overall cost.

There are many styles of wood fencing available.

When it comes time to replacing wood fencing, the material is sustainable and easy to dispose of. This is an important factor as wood fences have a limited life expectancy.

CONS:

While you can paint or stain a wood fence almost any color, the color will fade and chip over time and require that you paint or stain it again – and again.

Wood fencing is susceptible to rot, insects, termites, water damage, and damages from the elements. As time goes on, repairs and replacements of wood fencing can be costly.

When your fencing is compromised with insects and termites, this can bring potential problems to your neighboring home.

Fence boards made of wood must be properly treated in order to sustain from elements such as rain, snow, and other factors. If they are not, costly repairs and replacement costs may come in to play.

While wooden fences are susceptible to moisture damage, this damage can also lead to sagging which has to be replaced or repaired in order to keep your fence in good working order as well as looking good.

It is true that wood fences are easy to dispose of or recycle. However, in the time that you have one vinyl fence, it may be necessary to have several wooden fences. The cost of replacing and upkeep negate the sustainability of the fence itself.

While wood fencing has come a long way over the years, the maintenance and upkeep of wood fencing still remain a daunting – and costly – concern. In order to upkeep your wood fence, you should treat it for termites yearly, this cost alone can be a couple hundred dollars. Keep in mind if you want to keep throwing money at a product that has a limited life expectancy.

Overall Vinyl Vs Wood

There are many factors that you should consider when making the decision of what type of material to use for your fencing needs. Fences provide not only privacy and safety but security. You should feel that same security when you make an important investment in your home.

It is a simple fact that vinyl fencing will last longer than wood fencing and require much less repair and maintenance upkeep. These factors should be taken into consideration when looking at initial costs of fencing. Maintenance, upkeep, and replacement costs of fencing should be factored in with the initial installation costs in order to get a fair estimate of the actual cost of fence ownership in its lifetime.

You may feel that if you choose vinyl fencing that your style options are more limited than if you went with traditional wood fencing. This is not true at all. Not only can you get privacy fences made from vinyl but also stylish fencing such as equestrian rail fencing with two, three, or four rails. That does not even go into the other styles that are available in vinyl fence trends such as the classic picket fence, the Charleston styling, American Heritage classic styling, and more. These fences come in a variety of color choices that do not require you to repaint them in the coming years as they are resistant to fade and chipping.

If privacy is your main concern when it comes to fencing, vinyl privacy fence panels cannot be beat. Vinyl fence privacy panels do not have gaps in them and they will not contract or expand in the elements. Your neighbors will love the look as both sides are finished so you do not have to worry about who gets the unfinished side with posts that stick out. The panels even come available with nice decorative tops that not only are aesthetically pleasing but allow light to filter in to your yard. While wood privacy fencing may blend in with the outdoor elements, they may gap, sag, or warp over time. This not only requires maintenance but leaves your neighbors facing the same issues.

Since there is virtually no upkeep required on vinyl fencing, it leaves more time and money to do other projects around your yard and home. The yearly maintenance fees and upkeep on a wood fence can take you away from other projects that you could be pursuing.

Vinyl fences look new for a longer period of time than wood fences and age well. All the maintenance that is required on a vinyl fence is washing it – easily with a pressure washer – to keep the dirt and grime off of it that can accumulate over time.

Regardless of your fence choice – vinyl or wood – make sure that you look at the whole picture and take all costs and maintenance upkeep in mind when making your decision. Fencing is a long-term commitment and you should take careful consideration to make sure that you do not make a decision that you will regret in the future. When ten years down the road comes and you have to replace a wood fence, the decision to not to install a vinyl fence may be one that you regret.

The addition of a vinyl picket fence can add to the beauty of your home. While you can enclose the whole yard for security, enforce the landlines, and keep children and pets safe, you can also just enclose part of your yard as a way to accent a certain area.

Not only does a vinyl picket fence enhance the overall appearance of your home, but it is vertically maintenance free. A vinyl fence will never need to be painted and is free from rot and insects. In addition, both sides of the fence are finished, so both you and your neighbor have a view of the “finished side”.

Here is a step by step guide on how to install a vinyl picket fence for your home.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure – Walk the length of the perimeter of where you want the fence with an instrument of measure. You can usually push them along the way for an accurate measure of length.

Mark – Next, you will want to mark all of the corners and fence line with flags to ensure that all lines are parallel to the curb as well as other areas of your home and yard.

String – Put stakes at the corners and in points in between. Wrap the stakes with string in order to mark the entire area that you want to enclose in with the fence.

Dig Holes – Dig holes for every corner post as well as every eight feet along the fence line. In order to do this properly, you will need a power auger of posthole digger.

Gravel – To make sure that there is space for drainage, add about five to six inches of gravel to the bottom of the hole that you dug for each fence post. This will prevent the post from shifting over time.

Cement – You will need up to two eighty pound bags of cement per vinyl fence post. Mix this in a wheelbarrow with water and mix. (You can also use a small portable cement mixer to save time and energy.) You will then need to fill the post holes with cement leaving several inches at the top.

Plant the Vinyl Post – Each vinyl fence post is hollow. You will need to push the post into the wet cement and force as much of the cement in and around the posts as possible. A post level is needed to be used in order to make sure that each post is plumb.

Harden – Allow the vinyl fence post time to set and the cement to harden.

Mark for Vinyl Sections – You will need to determine how far off the ground each vinyl picket fence section needs to be. To do so, mark the posts on the top and bottom to determine the right location. You will then screw the brackets on to the posts.

Mounting the Vinyl Sections – You will then screw the brackets on to the vinyl posts. Next, you will secure the vinyl picket fence section to the brackets.

Completing the Enclosure – You will follow steps 5 through 10 for each post until all sections have been installed and leveled. Make sure to leave a space for everywhere you want to place a gate.

Installing the Gates – Measure, once again, the proper height of where the gate should go and mark it on the vinyl posts. Install your choice of a hinge and latch and install with screws and bolts. Do this everywhere you want a gate.

Finials – To ensure proper and consistent height of the fence, cut the tops of the vinyl posts with a handsaw or circular saw. To install a finial, use PVC adhesive glue to affix each finial to the vinyl picket fence posts.

The installation of a vinyl picket fence to your home not only adds beauty and security but will help increase the value. Whether you are enclosing the entire yard or just a section, the vinyl picket fence will help add security, safety, and mark specific areas including your landlines.

While installing a vinyl picket fence is not hard if you follow directions, there are some necessary tools that you will need. If you do not have those tools, do not fret. Most of these tools can be rented at your local tool rental store.

Here is a list of some of those tools and what they are used for.

Tools That May Be Needed:

Measuring Wheel – This handy wheel measures distance as you walk it alone any area or perimeter. It gives you a good idea of how much area you are trying to fence in and makes ordering supplies easier and more accurate. When you measure the area, you are able to have a better idea of how much supplies will be needed.

Post Hole Digger – This is a hand-held instrument that has two long handles and a digger at the bottom. It is used to make uninformed holes for posts. This digger can make a hole up to six inches in diameter and most have handles that are four foot long. The carbon steel blades of the digger will help you dig through soil that is compacted as well as cutting through grass.

Power Auger – A power auger can be manned by one person. It is great for digging post holes as it will dig a hole up to eight inches in diameter. It has a handle with a motor at the top and a long steel curvy post digger at the end.

Wheelbarrow – A wheelbarrow can be used to mix the cement to place in the holes for the vinyl fence posts. A wheelbarrow is a tub with two handles and three wheels for ease of mobility.

Concrete mixer – If you do not want to mix the concrete by hand, you can rent a small portable cement mixer. It is a barrel with the two handles, a motor, and two wheels. If you do not want to push around a cement mixer, you can also rent ones that are towable. You can hook it up to a vehicle with a tow package or to an outdoor ATV for ease of use.

Level – Levels are necessary to make sure that not only the posts are level but the entire fence panel. If you have one post or section that is not level, it will mess up the entire fence layout. A level is a simple tool with a bubble in the middle that tells you when something is level or needs to be to the left or right some or even if an end needs to be moved up or down.

Cordless Drill – A cordless power drill can be used to install the hardware that is needed to install each vinyl picket fence section to the vinyl post. The power drill is cordless and works off of batteries that are chargeable by plugging them into to a power outlet.

Impact Driver – A cordless impact driver may be better to use when installing a fence as it requires less manpower. Most have a rubberized grip to make it easier to handle and help prevent user fatigue.

Hand Saw – To cut the fence posts, you will need a saw. You can use a hand saw which is a flat blade with a serrated blade and a handle for gripping. You will be required a lot of strength to use a hand saw to cut so many posts and may start to feel fatigue.

Circular Saw – Instead of using a hand saw you can use a circular saw to cut the fence posts. This requires much less effort on the part of the user. The saw is round with a flat piece that fits against what you are cutting. Most have dust blowers to keep the debris off of the user and have one-handed adjustments for ease of use.

Having the right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. The right tool can make a mundane and difficult job easier. Tools can also help with fatigue on the part of the user and make a job move so much faster. Not to mention that having the right tool makes your project look more professional upon completion.

OVERALL

Once you have decided that a vinyl picket fence is the one for you, installation can be as simple as a few steps. With the right guidance and the right tools, nothing can hold you back from having a vinyl picket fence that looks professionally installed.

In addition, a vinyl picket fence will last you for years as it does not rot, requires no painting or staining, and is resistant to pests.
